I was not new to color. By the time I sat down in that chair I had been blonde, I had been highlighted, I had been bleached more times than I want to admit. But I had never taken my whole head red. Not a gloss, not a few pieces, all of it.

And I went from blonde to red in one session. I did not test a strand, I did not do it over two appointments, I did not sleep on it. I just went for it.

The color was gorgeous. What surprised me was how fast it started leaving. Every wash, the water ran orange. Within a few weeks the vivid copper had gone soft and sort of rusty, and my curls felt rougher than they had before, even though I was doing all the things the internet told me to do. Sulfate-free everything. Washing less. Cold water. Piling on the deepest conditioner I owned.

Here is what I did not understand then, and what almost nobody explains: the color leaving and the hair feeling worse are not two separate problems. They are the same problem. Once I understood that, my color started lasting longer, and my hair stopped getting progressively rougher every time I refreshed it.

This is the guide I wish someone had handed me before that appointment. It is built on the actual chemistry of what dye does to a hair fiber, reviewed alongside my hair scientist friend, and on more than a decade of coloring, bleaching, and then repairing my own curls.

The short answer: Permanent color works by oxidizing your hair, which permanently weakens the cuticle and leaves the fiber more permeable to water. Every time that fiber gets wet it swells, and swelling is what lets dye molecules diffuse back out. So caring for color-treated hair is not about finding a magic color-lock ingredient. It is about two things: reducing how often and how much your hair swells, and rebuilding a smooth, water-repelling surface with conditioning agents so the fiber is less permeable in the first place.

What Hair Color Actually Does to a Hair Fiber

To make a lasting color change, a permanent dye has to do three things inside the fiber at once. It has to swell the hair open with an alkaline agent (ammonia, or monoethanolamine in ammonia-free formulas), it has to destroy some of your natural pigment with an oxidizer (hydrogen peroxide), and it has to build new colored molecules inside the cortex out of small dye precursors that are large enough, once joined, to be trapped there.[1] Semi-permanent and direct dyes skip most of that, which is why they are gentler and also why they leave faster.[2]

The part that matters for your routine is what the oxidizer does on its way through. Hydrogen peroxide does not politely target melanin and ignore everything else. It also oxidizes the sulfur-containing amino acid cystine in your keratin into cysteic acid, breaking disulfide crosslinks that hold the fiber’s structure together.[3][4] It strips the thin lipid layer bound to the outside of the cuticle, the layer that made your hair water-repellent and slippery. And it degrades melanin, which was quietly acting as your hair’s own antioxidant and UV filter.

The one mechanism this whole guide hangs on

Put those changes together and you get a fiber that is more permeable to water than it was before. That single property is the engine behind almost everything people complain about after coloring.

  • Water moves in faster and in greater volume, so the fiber swells more with every wash.
  • Swelling widens the diffusion paths between cuticle scales, and dye molecules that got in that way can also get out that way. This is why fading happens mostly at the sink, not in the air.
  • A stripped, roughened, lipid-poor surface scatters light instead of reflecting it, so the color reads dull even before much pigment has actually left.
  • Rough scales catch on each other, so combing force goes up and breakage goes up with it.[3]
  • A swollen fiber is also a weaker one. Wet hair is measurably more fragile than dry hair, and color-treated wet hair more so again.

So when I say color care is about swelling and permeability, I mean it literally. Every genuinely useful tip in this article is doing one of two jobs: reducing swelling events, or reinforcing the surface so less water gets in. What I used to believe: that fading and dryness were two separate battles, one fought with color-safe products and one fought with moisture. I was buying a whole second set of products for a problem that had one cause.

Not All Color-Treated Hair Is Damaged the Same Amount

“Color-treated” gets used as one category, and it really is not. The amount of care your hair needs depends almost entirely on whether your color required lift, and how much.

Why Your Hair Color Fades So Fast

Fading is diffusion. Dye molecules leave a place where they are concentrated (inside your cortex) for a place where they are not (the water in your shower), and anything that swells the fiber or widens the exit route speeds that up. Here is the ranked list, honestly weighted, because most articles present ten tips as if they all matter equally and they do not.

1. Washing, by a wide margin

Every wash is a swelling event. This is the single largest controllable cause of fading, and it is why almost every legitimate tip on the internet is really a variation of “get your hair wet less, or for less time.” It also explains why co-washing does not spare your color the way people assume. It is the water doing the work, not only the surfactant.

2. Your color choice, before you did anything wrong

Reds fade fastest, and it is not your fault or your stylist’s. Red pigment molecules are comparatively large and less stable, so they diffuse in poorly and sit closer to the surface, which means they diffuse back out easily. Vivid fashion shades (copper, pink, blue, silver) are usually direct dyes with no oxidative locking at all. Cool tones and ash shades fade toward the warm underlying pigment left in your hair. Dark natural-looking shades hold longest.

When I went red, I was fighting the hardest color to keep, on hair that had already been lightened, which is the most permeable starting point possible. My hair color was not fading because I was doing something wrong. It was fading because I had picked the highest-difficulty setting and did not know it.

3. Heat, both kinds

Hot water swells hair more than cool water does, so it releases more pigment per wash. Hot tools do something different: they drive off water and accelerate oxidation of both pigment and protein at the surface. If you are heat styling color-treated hair, a heat protectant stops being optional.

4. UV exposure

Sunlight photo-oxidizes dye molecules and hair protein at the same time. Color-treated hair is more vulnerable here than virgin hair, because the melanin that used to absorb some of that UV has been partially destroyed. A hat is the most effective UV filter there is. Second best is a leave-in with actual UV absorbers on the label (benzophenone-4, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, polyquaternium-59) rather than a product that just says “UV protection” on the front.

5. Water quality, which nobody warns you about

Hard water deposits calcium and magnesium on the fiber, which dulls color and makes hair feel rough regardless of what you put on it. Copper, from old pipes and from pools, is worse: it binds to damaged hair and can turn lightened or blonde hair green, and it catalyzes further oxidative damage. Neither is fixed by a color-safe shampoo. That is a job for a chelating shampoo, which uses ingredients like EDTA or sodium phytate to bind the metals and rinse them away.

6. Chlorine and salt water

Chlorine is an oxidizer, so it does a small version of what your developer did. The green tint people blame on chlorine is usually the copper in the pool water, not the chlorine itself. The fix is not a product, it is saturation: soak your hair in clean tap water before you get in, so the fiber is already full and takes up less pool water, then add a conditioner or an oil as a physical barrier. A pre-swim product like Aqua Guard does the same job in one step. Rinse and wash as soon as you are out.

Four Things You Have Been Told About Color-Treated Hair That Are Wrong

“Sulfate-free means color-safe”

This is the most repeated claim in the category, and it is a label rule standing in for a formulation question. Sulfates are a family of anionic surfactants, and they vary enormously in strength depending on which one, at what concentration, and what else is in the bottle to buffer them. A well-formulated sulfate shampoo can be gentler on your color than a badly formulated sulfate-free one, and plenty of sulfate-free cleansers are perfectly capable of stripping.

It is also worth knowing where the scary sulfate research comes from. The studies most often cited use concentrated surfactant solutions, sometimes at raised temperature, with the hair immersed for long periods. That is not what happens when a diluted shampoo touches your scalp for sixty seconds and gets rinsed. I go through this properly in shampoo surfactants: the ultimate clean-up crew.

What actually matters for your color: cleansing strength, water temperature, contact time, and how many times a week you do it. Choosing a mild cleanser is genuinely good advice. “Sulfate-free” is just a crude proxy for it.

“Wait 72 hours so the cuticle can close and seal the color in”

The wait is good advice. The explanation is not. Your cuticle is not a door with a hinge. Cuticle scales lie flat when the fiber is in good condition and lift when it is swollen, roughened, or damaged, and once color has chemically lifted and eroded them they do not close again on a timer.[5]

What is really happening in those first couple of days is that oxidative dye development finishes, the fiber returns from its alkaline swollen state toward its normal pH and diameter, and the largest, least stable pigment molecules (the ones that were going to wash out first anyway) are still loosely held. Washing during that window costs you more color than washing later. So yes, wait 48 to 72 hours. Just know you are waiting for the fiber to settle, not for a door to shut.

“Color-treated hair is dry, so it needs moisture and hydration”

This one cost me years. Hair is not a sponge that runs low on water and needs topping up. Hair’s water content is governed mainly by the relative humidity of the air around it, not by what you apply.[6] And here is the uncomfortable part: damaged, color-treated hair actually absorbs more water than healthy hair, because the water-repelling lipid layer that used to keep water out has been oxidized away. More water in the fiber means more swelling, more pigment loss, and a fiber that is weaker while wet.

So when a product makes your colored hair feel soft and smooth again, it is not hydrating it. It is conditioning it: depositing a thin film of cationic surfactants, fatty alcohols, oils, or silicones that fills in the roughness, cuts friction between strands, restores light reflection, and makes the surface more water-repellent again. That is a real, valuable, measurable thing. It just is not moisture, and calling it moisture is what leads people to soak their hair for hours chasing a feeling and end up with hygral fatigue. What I used to believe: that my colored hair was thirsty and my job was to force water into it. I was doing hour-long soaking deep conditioning sessions on hair that was already taking on too much water. I was making the swelling problem worse and calling it self-care.

“Silicones fade your color and suffocate your hair”

Silicones are hydrophobic film-formers. On color-treated hair that has lost its own hydrophobic surface layer, that is close to exactly what the fiber is missing. They lower friction (fewer tangles, less mechanical breakage), they raise shine by smoothing the surface that light bounces off, they are thermally stable enough to help against hot tools, and a water-repellent film means less water uptake per wash, which means less swelling and less pigment loss. They do not suffocate anything, and they are not linked to hormone disruption or cancer.

The legitimate consideration is buildup, which is a routine question, not a safety question, and heavy natural oils and butters build up just as readily. If you prefer to skip them, that is a completely reasonable personal choice and I keep a whole silicone-free conditioner list. Just make the choice knowing what you are trading, not because you were told a silicone will ruin your color.

The Color-Treated Hair Routine That Actually Holds Up

Every step below is doing one of the two jobs: fewer or gentler swelling events, or a better surface. I have put them in order of how much difference they make, not in the order you do them.

Wash less often, but do not stop washing

Fewer washes means fewer swelling events, and that is the highest-leverage change available to you. Most color-treated curly and wavy hair does well on two to three washes a week. But there is a limit that colored-hair articles never mention: a scalp that is not cleansed properly develops buildup and irritation, and buildup on the lengths dulls color just as effectively as fading does. If your scalp is itchy, flaky, or greasy at the roots, wash it. I spent years afraid of shampoo and it did not save my color, it just gave me a mess to clarify later.

Shorten the wet time, not just the wash count

Total minutes wet matters, not just how many showers. Detangle before you get in, keep your rinse efficient, and get your hair out of the water when you are done rather than standing under the stream while you do everything else. Long soaking conditioning sessions are the hidden swelling event people never count.

Use cooler water for the wash and the final rinse

Cooler water swells the fiber less, so less pigment leaves per wash. The effect is real but modest, so do not expect it to save a color that is fading for other reasons. A lukewarm wash and a cool final rinse is a sensible compromise if standing under cold water is not happening for you.

Condition every single wash, and pick the formula for damaged hair

This is the other half of the strategy, and it is where the actual repair-feeling comes from. Good conditioners work through a lamellar gel network, a structure formed when cationic surfactants (behentrimonium chloride, behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium chloride) pair with fatty alcohols (cetyl, cetearyl, stearyl) in the right ratio in water.[7] That structure is what delivers slip and leaves an even film behind.

Here is the part that is specific to you: hair carries a negative surface charge, and bleached and color-treated hair is more negatively charged than virgin hair. Cationic conditioning agents are positively charged, so they deposit onto damaged hair better than onto healthy hair. Buying a conditioner formulated for damaged or color-treated hair is not marketing, it is charge chemistry working in your favor. My picks are in rinse-out conditioners for high porosity hair.

Add a leave-in, then a styler, in that order

A leave-in keeps a conditioning film on the fiber between washes, which is when most of the friction and UV exposure happens. On color-treated hair I would call it non-negotiable, and I would specifically look for one with UV absorbers on the label. See leave-in conditioners for high porosity hair.

Deep condition, but stop treating it as a soak

A deep conditioner is a richer, more concentrated conditioner with better substantivity, not a different mechanism. Fifteen to twenty minutes is plenty; gentle warmth helps deposition. What it is not is a repair. Which brings me to the honest part.

Be realistic about what “repair” means

Hair is not living tissue. There is no cellular machinery in a strand to rebuild the disulfide bonds your developer broke. Conditioning agents, hydrolyzed proteins, and bond-building peptides all work at or just under the surface: they adsorb, they fill in gaps, they temporarily raise strength measurements and dramatically improve how hair feels and behaves. Large protein molecules cannot penetrate the cortex at all and simply form a film; smaller hydrolyzed fragments and peptides may penetrate somewhat, but that is a maybe, not a guarantee.[8][5]

That is not a reason to skip them. A film that reduces friction genuinely prevents the next round of breakage, and prevention is most of the battle. It is a reason to stop expecting a bottle to undo a chemical service, and to stop feeling like a failure when it does not. Damaged ends grow out; they do not heal. Oil the night before you wash, not just after

A pre-wash oil application does something specific and useful: it partially fills the fiber and coats the surface, so the hair takes up less water during the wash and swells less. That is the swelling lever again. Coconut oil is one of the few with real evidence of penetrating the fiber; most others sit on the surface and reduce friction, which is still worth having. Handle wet hair like it is fragile, because it is

Wet, swollen, color-treated hair is the weakest your hair will ever be. Detangle with conditioner in, with fingers or a wide tooth comb, from the ends up. Squeeze water out with a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt instead of rubbing. Never brush it dry and un-conditioned. See why wet hair is more fragile.

Maintain the tone between appointments

The thing that will actually keep your color looking fresh at week six is not a stronger conditioner, it is putting a little pigment back. Color-depositing conditioners and masks, glosses, and toning shampoos deposit direct dye on and just under the surface, refreshing tone without another oxidative service. Match the pigment to what you are losing: purple or blue for yellow and orange in blonde or lightened hair (see what purple shampoo actually does and why hair turns yellow), copper or red for faded reds, and a clear gloss for anyone who just wants shine. Start with less time than the box says, especially on lightened hair, because damaged hair grabs pigment unevenly.

Space out your services

Overlapping fresh chemistry onto already-processed lengths is the single most damaging thing people do to colored hair. Ask for root-only retouches, push appointments to eight to ten weeks where you can, and never stack a lightening service and another chemical service in the same visit.

What to Actually Look For on the Label

I am deliberately not giving you an “ingredients to avoid” list. Those lists are the most copied, least useful thing in this whole category, and singling out one ingredient as the villain is how people end up with a routine built entirely out of fears. A formula’s performance comes from the whole formulation, the ratios, and the processing, not from the presence or absence of one name on a label. Two products with the same hero ingredient at the same percentage can behave completely differently.

What is useful is knowing what each category of ingredient is for, so you can look at a label and understand what job the formulator was trying to do.

Gentle cleansing (the surfactant base)

Milder anionic and amphoteric surfactants clean with less swelling and less lipid removal. On a label these look like sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, sodium cocoyl isethionate, sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, sodium lauroyl glutamate, cocamidopropyl betaine, and the glucosides (decyl, coco, lauryl). Position in the list tells you more than presence does.

Conditioning and slip (the part that does the visible work)

Cationic surfactants paired with fatty alcohols are the engine: behentrimonium chloride, behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium chloride, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine and behenamidopropyl dimethylamine (both good on color-treated hair), with cetyl, cetearyl, or stearyl alcohol. Cationic polymers like polyquaternium-10 and guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride extend the effect. Silicones and amodimethicone deposit preferentially onto damaged areas.

Surface reinforcement and shine

Oils and emollients reduce friction and raise gloss. Low-viscosity oils with a higher refractive index give more shine per gram, which is why finishing oils are usually light rather than heavy. Coconut, olive, apricot kernel, meadowfoam seed, and avocado oil all show up in color-treated formulas for good reason. Weight matters more than origin: a heavy natural butter will flatten fine hair exactly as fast as a heavy silicone will.

Proteins and peptides

Hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed quinoa, amino acids, and peptides such as sh-oligopeptide-78. Useful film-formers that improve feel and combability and can raise strength measurements temporarily. Do not expect structural repair, and do not go hunting for a “protein and moisture balance” that has never been demonstrated to exist. Also see polymers in hair products.

UV absorbers, worth seeking out specifically

Benzophenone-3 and -4, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane, polyquaternium-59, cinnamidopropyltrimonium chloride. Genuinely relevant for color-treated hair and rarer on labels than you would expect.

Chelators

Disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, sodium phytate, sodium gluconate. Present in small amounts in most formulas for stability; present in meaningful amounts in a true chelating shampoo. This is the ingredient class hard-water and pool people need.

A Weekly Routine You Can Actually Follow

Adjust for your own scalp and density. This is a starting structure, not a rule.

The first 72 hours after color

  • Do not wash. This is the single highest-return rule in the whole post.
  • Skip hot tools and direct sun where you can.
  • No clarifying or chelating shampoo. Save those for the wash right before your next appointment, not the one right after.

Every wash day (2 to 3 times a week)

  • Optional pre-wash oil the night before or thirty minutes ahead, especially on the ends.
  • Cleanse the scalp with a mild shampoo, lukewarm water, and let the runoff do the lengths.
  • Conditioner on mid-lengths and ends, detangle with it in, leave three to five minutes, rinse cool.
  • Leave-in on damp hair, then your styler. Do not skip the leave-in on color-treated hair.
  • Air dry or diffuse on low with heat protection.

Every one to two weeks

  • Swap the rinse-out for a deep conditioner, fifteen to twenty minutes, gentle warmth optional.

Every two to four weeks, or when tone starts to shift

  • Color-depositing conditioner, gloss, or toning shampoo matched to what you are losing. Start with half the recommended time.

As needed, not on a schedule

  • Clarify when hair feels coated and product stops working.
  • Chelate if you have hard water, well water, or have been swimming.

Products I Have Actually Used on Color-Treated Hair

I have dropped the full ingredient lists from this post. They go stale, brands reformulate constantly, and copying an INCI list onto a page does not teach you anything. Check the bottle for current ingredients and confirm size, because it varies by retailer. Where I have used something myself, I have said so plainly, including where it did not work for me.

Cleansers

dpHUE Cool Blonde Shampoo. A toning shampoo for blonde and lightened hair rather than an everyday cleanser. It deposits violet pigment to counter yellow, and it works, but treat it as a tone tool used once a week or so, not your regular shampoo. IGK Pay Day Instant Repair Shampoo. A gentle isethionate and glucoside base with peptide and protein conditioning agents. A good everyday option for color-treated hair that also wants some strengthening feel.

Redken Acidic Color Gloss Shampoo. Currently one of the most recommended color-safe cleansers in the category, and the acidic pH is the point: a lower pH keeps the fiber less swollen through the wash, which is exactly the lever this whole article is about.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo. The long-standing sulfate-free salon standard for dry color-treated hair. Concentrated, so a small amount goes far.\

L’Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate-Free Shampoo. The best value pick in almost every current roundup, and the one I would point someone to who is not spending forty dollars on shampoo.

Conditioners and Masks

Design Essentials Natural Almond & Avocado Wash Day Deep Moisture Masque. This is a really great mask for high porosity hair, and it conditioned my hair genuinely well. I was surprised, because I had always been a Don’t Despair, Repair loyalist. My stylist used this on me and it worked even better.

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair. I always swear by this one. It is pricey, but it is an overall great formula and it has never let me down.

Roux Rejuvenating Porosity Control Corrector and Conditioner. One of my favorite products, and the one that helped my hair recover from severe dryness after a bad bleach job. A protein treatment did nothing. A deep conditioner did nothing. Olaplex did nothing for me at the time. This is what saved my hair. It is an acidic, low pH formula, which is very likely why it worked when nothing else did.

Pattern Beauty Intensive Conditioner. A rich, cationic and butter-heavy formula built for thicker, drier, tighter textures, and it delivers on that. I owned the huge size and it is a great conditioner. My one complaint is practical rather than formulary: it is seriously thick, and the large size ships with a pump that it is almost impossible to get the product out of. If you are buying the big jar, expect to fight the pump or transfer it into something else. Too heavy for fine hair either way.

Olaplex No. 3 Hair Perfector. I used this on my hair when I first got a bleach job during my healthy hair journey, and I loved it. I would never lighten my hair again without Olaplex. It makes all the difference. What it is doing is bond-building, working alongside the lightening service to limit how much damage happens in the first place, and that is exactly where it earns its reputation. Where I would set expectations lower is as a rescue product. Later on, when my hair was already severely over-processed, it did not do much for me, because by then the damage was already done. Use it with the service, not to undo one.

Leave-Ins and Treatments

Giovanni Direct Leave-In Weightless Moisture Conditioner. I recommend this for every hair type. It is a vegetarian product, it is affordable, it is genuinely weightless the way it claims, and it just works.

Oribe Power Drops Color Preservation Booster. An antioxidant leave-in booster you mix into your conditioner. Expensive, but a sensible concept for color-treated hair given how much of fading is oxidative.

IGK Mixed Feelings Leave-In Blonde Toning Drops. Toning drops for blondes that let you tone a little at a time instead of committing to a whole purple wash.

K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask. Honest verdict: this one is okay, but if your hair is severely damaged it is not worth the price. I tried to revive my hair with it after heat damage and it did not work, because my hair was simply too far gone. It is probably better suited to hair that is not extremely damaged. My other issue is practical: very little product comes out of the pump, and if you have a lot of hair you can burn through the whole bottle in one use. Not worth it to me.

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray. A heat-activated hydrophobic film that makes hair repel water. For anyone whose color-treated hair goes rough and frizzy in humidity, this is the most direct application of the water-repelling principle in this whole article.

How long should I really wait to wash my hair after coloring?

Forty-eight to seventy-two hours. You are not waiting for the cuticle to close, you are waiting for oxidative development to finish and for the swollen fiber to settle back toward its normal state. Washing inside that window costs you noticeably more pigment.

Does cold water actually keep color from fading?

Yes, but modestly. Cooler water swells the fiber less, so less pigment leaves per wash. It will not rescue a color that is fading because you wash daily, sit in the sun, or picked a red. Lukewarm wash, cool final rinse is a fine compromise.

Why does red fade so much faster than everything else?

Red pigment molecules are larger and less chemically stable than brown and black ones, so they diffuse into the cortex poorly and sit closer to the surface, which means they leave easily. Vivid coppers and fashion reds are usually direct dyes with no oxidative locking at all. Nothing has gone wrong. Plan for a color-depositing product from day one.

Can I use a clarifying shampoo on color-treated hair?

Yes, occasionally, and time it well. Use it the wash before your next appointment rather than the wash after your last one. If your hair feels coated and nothing is working, buildup is the likelier culprit than fading.

Why did my lightened hair turn green?

Copper, almost always from pool water or old plumbing, binding to damaged hair. A purple shampoo does nothing for it because it is a metal problem, not a tone problem. You need a chelating shampoo.

Is co-washing better for colored hair than shampooing?

Not necessarily. Most fading is caused by the water and the swelling it produces, not by the surfactant alone, so co-washing does not spare your color the way people assume. It also leaves scalp buildup behind over time. Cleanse your scalp on a schedule that keeps it comfortable.

Do I need protein treatments for color-treated hair?

Protein-containing products are useful film-formers that improve feel, combability, and short-term strength measurements. They do not rebuild the disulfide bonds your developer broke, and there is no measurable protein and moisture balance to manage. Use them if your hair responds well, skip them if it does not.

Can damaged color-treated hair be repaired?

Not truly. Hair is not living tissue, so there is no biological repair mechanism. What products can do is condition the surface, reduce friction, prevent further breakage, and dramatically improve appearance and feel. Damaged ends grow out; they do not heal. That honesty is worth more than another bottle.

How often can I color my hair without wrecking it?

Eight to ten weeks between services where you can, root retouches only rather than pulling color through the lengths, and never two chemical services in one visit. Overlapping fresh chemistry onto processed hair is the fastest route to breakage.

Does hard water fade hair color?

It dulls it and roughens the fiber, which reads as faded. Calcium and magnesium deposit on the surface and no color-safe shampoo will remove them. A chelating shampoo will.

The Bottom Line

Color-treated hair is not thirsty. It is oxidized, more permeable to water, and missing the lipid layer that used to keep water out and light bouncing off. That single fact explains the fading, the roughness, the dullness, and the breakage all at once, and it tells you exactly what to do: swell it less, and give it back a smooth, water-repelling, low-friction surface.

If I could go back and say one thing to the woman who walked in blonde and walked out red without a second thought, it would not be “do not do it.” I loved that color, and I would do it again. It would be this: the fading was never a sign you were failing. It was chemistry, and chemistry you can work with once someone actually explains it to you.

Go for the color. Just go in knowing what it costs, and what genuinely buys it back.
