Have you noticed your curls looking dull, flat, or limp lately? Has your hair felt dry no matter how many moisturizing and conditioning products you use, while still refusing to cooperate with your styling attempts? If so, it might be time for an upgrade.
Most of us rarely think twice about our hair until something goes wrong. As soon as a problem arises, we begin to frantically search for answers to restore its condition.
One of the best solutions for solving these issues is with a clarifying shampoo. That’s what we’re talking about today!
As someone who has spent years experimenting and perfecting my haircare routine, I’m thrilled to share my tried and trusted formulas for a fresh start.
When choosing a clarifying shampoo, it’s essential to recognize which ingredients can enhance the product for maximum results.
In this blog, we’ll take an in-depth look at what ingredients should be on your list of must-have clarifying shampoos.
From cult classics that have been around for years to up-and-coming brands setting up shop within the clean beauty space; here is your ultimate guide to the best clarifying shampoos for curly hair!
What is Clarifying and How Can it Benefit You?
When we talk about the process of clarifying, it has a couple of meanings. It can denote a “deep cleansing” and detoxification procedure for your hair and scalp.
It can also be used to describe the ability of a shampoo or conditioner to remove product build-up or other impurities that have accumulated on the hair over time.
Every day, a build-up of air and environmental pollutants as well as hair care products accumulates on the strands of our hair. This layer forms a barrier around your hair, depriving them of getting the proper moisture they need.
For you to achieve optimal results with your curly hair products, they need to be able to penetrate the surface of your hair.
If a layer of product residue or other impurities coats the strands, then your curls will struggle to reach their full potential.
Clarifying shampoos are formulated to provide thorough cleansing and bestow several benefits for your overall hair health.
This can include:
- removing dirt, oil, and product build-up from your hair.
- restoring the natural pH levels of your scalp.
- amplifies volume and movement.
- maintaining an optimal balance between oiliness and dryness.
- strengthening of the hair follicles and strands.
- preventing dandruff.
- removes the build-up of chlorine, etc.
- revive dull hair to its original healthy state with a refreshing reset.
- boost the efficacy of conditioners, masks, and other treatments by allowing them to penetrate hair more efficiently.
How Do You Clarify Curly Hair?
There are a few ways to clarify curly hair, but the most common way is to use a clarifying shampoo.
When choosing the best clarifying shampoo for curly hair, you want to pick one that specifically states it’s suitable for it.
These formulas are designed to be gentle enough not to strip the hair of its natural oils, while still getting rid of dirt, product build-up, and other impurities.

What is a Clarifying Shampoo?
A clarifying shampoo is a hair-cleansing formulation that removes product build-up, debris, and excess sebum.1
The deposits of polymeric ingredients, oils, and black particles make hair greasy, sticky, and heavy with a limp-down effect.
Shampooing with a clarifying shampoo can get rid of these deposits leaving hair clean, hydrated, and with a natural appearance.
Depending on how much residue is present on your hair, you can choose a gentle formula for weekly use or something stronger which should be used no more than monthly – however, always pay attention to your scalp and strands before deciding what will work best for you.
Products and conditioning ingredients can often leave behind a residue, which accumulates over time to cause hair to become less voluminous and soft. This buildup of particles results in lackluster-looking curls.
What does clarifying my curly hair do?
Clarifying your curls is the way to restore their natural luster, bounce, and softness. By eliminating all of the product residues that have been accumulating on your strands, you will experience a full head of bouncy, refreshed curls with improved texture.
Are clarifying shampoos safe for curly hair?
Clarifying shampoos may be beneficial in helping to remove residue, however overusing it can potentially cause harm.
Surfactants present within these products could strip your scalp of natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation.
If you find that using this type of shampoo more than once a week causes your hair to become dried out or lifeless then switch up the formula for one with gentler ingredients instead.
When selecting a clarifying shampoo, make sure to consider if you have any of the following conditions: dermatitis, dandruff, seborrheic, or psoriasis. These conditions can be exacerbated with the use of some chemicals in some clarifying shampoos.
Active Surfactants and Their Position on the INCI Listing
Surfactants, or surface active molecules, are the main working force of a cleansing formulation. By reducing water’s surface tension and enhancing its wetting power, surfactants make it much simpler to cleanse dirt away.2
Formulators have a range of surfactants to select from when creating a cleansing product. When they are developing a clarifying shampoo, the choices are usually between sulfates such as sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulfate, or using sulfate-free functional surfactants for an entirely sulfate-free formulation.
Sulfates are not favorable to skin and hair because they may strip away vital lipids, leaving them dry and brittle. Furthermore, when used long-term, sulfates have a higher potential for causing irritation than other ingredients.
However, if you do not have or never had a negative reaction to sulfates, then feel free to use them.
Ingredients to look for in a clarifying shampoo
When selecting a clarifying shampoo product, it should contain the following surfactants:
● Decyl glucoside, coco glucoside, lauryl glucoside (green alternatives, sugar-based nonionic, preferred).
● Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate – mild, rich creamy lather, hydrating (Preferred).
● Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate – mild, hydrating (Preferred).
● Sodium Laureth Sulfate (Avoid it).
● Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (Please avoid).
Hydrating Ingredients
Healthy-looking hair requires moisture to combat frizz and dryness. Choosing a hydrating ingredient is contingent upon its ability to work with other ingredients of the formulation, such as the primary surfactants.
The top hydrating ingredients for a clarifying shampoo are:
● Betaine – a natural water-holding molecule obtained from beetroot extract (Preferred).
● Propanediol – is a natural, green alternative to traditional humectants (Preferred).
● Glycerin or Propylene glycol – traditional humectants.
Cationic Conditioning Ingredients
Cationic polymers make wet and dry combing incredibly easy. They bind to protein residues on the hair, giving them a slip and a smoother feel, which makes detangling easier. It also boosts other active ingredients to adhere more effectively.
Our favorite cationic polymers for a clarifying shampoo are:
● Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride – guar-derived hair conditioner.
● Polyquaternium-10, – cellulose-derived hair conditioner for superior wet and dry combing.
Other additives to look for in a clarifying shampoo formulation:
● Cocamidopropyl Betaine – a mild co-surfactant to boost foam generation.
● Cocoamphodiacetate – another mild cleansing agent.
● Fragrance – natural aromatic essential oils are better than synthetic fragrances.
● Preservatives – avoid DMDM-Hydantoin and Imadazolidinyl Urea. Instead, go for green alternatives, such as Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Hexylene Glycol, etc.
Clarifying shampoos often contain a mix of cleansing agents, sulfate, or olefin sulfonate. It is important to clarify that sulfonates are not sulfate. The two surfactants are completely different in terms of chemistry, cleaning potency, and foam production potential.
Olefin sulfonates are commonly used in shampoos as well. Not only are they gentle, mild, and biodegradable but they’re also the preferred choice for a sulfate-free shampoo.
Certain brands may choose to blend sulfates with olefin sulfonate or other sulfate-free surfactants, potentially to reduce costs or enhance the production of foam–since sulfates are renowned for their capacity to produce copious amounts of lather.
Unfortunately, the product still contains sulfate. Therefore, it is important for consumers to thoroughly look at the ingredients listed on the label before purchasing.
What is the Difference Between Clarifying and Detoxifying?
Clarifying and detoxifying are often utilized as interchangeable terms, however, they do not always share the same meaning. This is usually due to the marketing language used by different companies.
You may have heard the word, “Detoxification,” for the body. The goal of detoxification is to remove any accumulated toxins or potentially dangerous substances from the body. Similarly, hair may need a detox from toxins such as chlorine.
Chlorine readily seeps into strands when swimming in pools, and can be detrimental to their strength and longevity if not properly removed.
Hair detoxification or hair detox focuses on natural ingredients such as charcoal, bentonite clay, and minerals to eliminate any undesired debris from your scalp and strands.
Clarifying on the other hand is the process of removing product build-up and other pollutants from the hair. They are more likely to contain synthetic ingredients that can strip your hair of its natural oils if used excessively.
While clarifying and hair detox shampoos both seek to achieve the same purpose of eliminating residue, minerals, toxins, and residue from your scalp and hair, they differ significantly in their active ingredients.
The takeaway is that “clarifying “and “detoxifying” is not the same because clarifying doesn’t involve removing toxins.
Natural Remedies
Here are several ways to neutralize chlorine in your hair:
1) Apple Cider Vinegar – Fill a spray bottle with 1 c. water and 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar, then spritz it onto the hair. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it out with cold water.
2) Baking Soda – Create a paste with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 cup of water. Work the mixture into your hair until it’s saturated. Leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing out with cold water.
3) Lemon Juice – Squeeze the juice of one lemon into a bowl and work it through your hair. Leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing out with cold water.
4) Use a shampoo containing EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid), such as Hard Water Wellness Shampoo by Malibu C.
5) Vitamin C crystals are a powdered form of ascorbic acid.
- For best results, mix a teaspoon of crystals with a pint of water.
- Pour the mixture into an easy-to-use spray bottle.
- Then, apply it generously to both your hair and skin – if you don’t notice any changes in smell right away, simply rinse off the vitamin C solution and reapply.
- If you don’t want to deal with a DIY solution, consider using Solpri Swimmers Chlorine Swim Shampoo Body Wash and Conditioner with Vitamin C, UltraSwim Chlorine Removal Shampoo, or TRISWIM Chlorine Removal Swimmers Shampoo.
Cleansing Clay for Curly Hair
If you’re struggling with breakage or dryness due to shampooing, try using bentonite clay – a cleansing clay that can help restore your hair’s natural moisture.
Bentonite clay is a natural detoxifier and helps to remove any product build-up or environmental pollutants from the scalp and hair.
Not only does it have the power to soothe and heal, but also can be a great ally in providing relief from an irritated scalp or reducing inflammation.
Will a Clarifying Shampoo Reverse Damage Done to My Curly Hair?
If you’re dealing with damaged hair, a clarifying shampoo can’t provide the long-term solution you’re looking for. To mend broken strands and restore your curly to their former glory, you’ll need something more targeted.
Once your cuticles have been harmed by color, bleach, excessive heat, or other causes, they cannot be reversed.
However, you can use protein treatments to temporarily fix any damaged areas while your hair begins to grow out again. This will help fill in the cracks and improve the overall look of your curly hair.
How to Choose the Right Clarifying Shampoo for You
When choosing a clarifying shampoo, it is important to consider your hair type and the level of clarification that you need.
For those with oily hair, a stronger formulation may be best, while those with dry or damaged hair should opt for a gentler option that won’t strip away the natural moisture from your curls.
If you’re following the curly girl method, be sure to read through each shampoo’s ingredients list carefully. That way, you can make certain that it will work perfectly with your curls!

- Lemon juice is a natural astringent and helps to remove excess oil.
- Apple cider vinegar has antibacterial activity and also acts as an astringent which can help lay down the cuticle and reduce frizziness.
- Aloe vera is believed to help with the frizziness of curls and it also helps to moisturize.
