Sulfate and silicone free shampoo for curly hair have become a popular alternative to conventional shampoos. Both ingredients may be harsh and drying, so it makes sense to avoid them if you can.
But which shampoos are actually sulfate and silicone-free? And which ones work best for curly hair?
Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you! In this post, we’ll share our top picks for sulfate and silicone free shampoo options specifically designed for curly hair.
Sulfates are a type of surfactant, or cleansing agent, commonly found in shampoos and other hair care products. They are known for their ability to effectively remove dirt and oil from hair, making them a popular choice for those with oily or greasy hair.
Sulfates can sabotage your hair’s moisture levels, leading to scalp irritation, damage over time, and brittle strands (if used in excess).
For this reason, many people with curly or textured hair choose to use sulfate-free shampoo instead.
Sulfate-free shampoos typically contain a blend of mild surfactants, and formulations usually comprise two to three surfactants.
The absolute most critical element to seek out in a sulfate free shampoo is examining the product’s ingredient list to check whether it’ll work with your hair and scalp.
While sulfate free is a buzzword now, just because a shampoo is marketed as sulfate-free doesn’t guarantee that it will be more “gentle”.
Neither are sulfate free shampoo formulations are created equal. Even if a shampoo is sulfate free, it can still contain harsh ingredients that has a negative effect your scalp and hair.
If you want to reap the best results from your sulfate free shampoo, it’s important to choose one that contains plant-based, nature-derived surfactants. They are usually gentler on skin and hair than other options, plus they have less of a negative environmental impact.
Here is a a list of sulfate-alternative surfactants:
Silicones are a type of ingredient used in many hair care products, including shampoo and conditioner. They are often added to formulas to impart a smooth, silky feel on the hair, as well as to improve hair manageability and reduce frizz.
The main benefit of using silicones in hair products is their ability to form a protective barrier around the hair strand and prevent moisture from entering or leaving, which means less frizz and more manageable hair. This also helps keep your hair hydrated and prevents damage from heat styling or exposure to harsh environmental conditions.
Silicones are not helpful for every texture, but it can be very beneficial for people with coarse, curly hair because they can make the individual strands of your curls smoother and softer. They also provide great slip in conditioners.
While there are some benefits for going silicone free, there is also some controversy surrounding these ingredients.
Some people believe that silicones in hair products can cause buildup on the scalp and hair over time, clogging the follicles and leading to hair loss. Others worry that silicones in shampoo can cause irritation or skin sensitivity.
Silicones in and of itself is not a bad ingredient as long as you know how to use it. While they can make some hair types oily and weigh them down, other textures (such as wavy) become limp or flat.
If you frequently use silicone-based products, you might start to notice that they leave your hair dry and can result in build-up, which then becomes difficult to remove.
You should avoid using silicone in your hair if it gets weighed down easily, you don’t use shampoo, or you’re unhappy with how it feels. Just because something isn’t working out for you, doesn’t mean it’s a bad option for everyone else.
There are a number of things to look for when choosing the best silicone free shampoo, including:
Ingredients – You should carefully read the ingredient list of your shampoo to make sure that it does not contain any silicones.
Silicones generally end in;
-col
-cone
-conol
-xane
Along with using a silicone-free shampoo, it’s important to avoid other ingredients that can be harmful for curly hair and lead to damage or frizz.
Some of the most common culprits to avoid include:
Alcohol – Alcohols like SD alcohol or denatured alcohol can strip the hair of its natural oils and cause dryness, frizz, and breakage if used in excess.
Artificial fragrances and dyes – Scented products that use artificial fragrance or dyes can irritate your scalp, especially if you are prone to scalp sensitivity.
Parabens – Parabens are a type of preservative added to cosmetic products, and they can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some people.
Mineral oil – Mineral oil is a common ingredient in many hair products and can cause build up, dullness, and dryness.
Phthalates – Phthalates are added to hair products to help them dissolve in water, and they can cause skin and scalp irritation.
Overall, choosing a silicone-free shampoo and avoiding other harmful ingredients can help you achieve healthier, more manageable curls.
